From the 1988 NDPPC proposal to today's coordinated all-hazards programme — three decades of building disaster resilience on Nevis.

Nov 1988

NDPPC Proposal

The National Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Committee (NDPPC) proposal is submitted to the Federal Cabinet.

20 Jan 1989

Disaster Office Established

The Disaster Office is established on St. Kitts under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sept 1989

Hurricane Hugo

Hurricane Hugo causes widespread devastation across the Caribbean — exposing the urgent need for dedicated disaster management on Nevis.

Jan 1991

Nevis Disaster Office Founded

The Nevis Disaster Management Office is established under the Ministry of Home Affairs, with the late Llewellyn Newton as the first Director.

1995

Hurricanes Luis & Marilyn

Hurricanes Luis and Marilyn inflict severe damage on St. Kitts and Nevis, accelerating legislative reform.

1998

Disaster Management Act No. 5

Legislation outlining the roles and functions of disaster management (Act No. 5 of 1998) is passed — providing for the effective management and control of disasters and community mobilisation through district committees.

2005

Renamed to NDMD

The Nevis Disaster Management Office is modified to the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) to reflect its expanded role.

Today

Under the Premier's Ministry

NDMD falls under the purview of the Premier's Ministry in the Nevis Island Administration — responsible for preparedness, management, mitigation, coordination, control, recovery and rehabilitation.

Remembering Llewellyn Newton

NDMD's first Director, the late Llewellyn Newton, set the foundation for disaster management on Nevis when the Office was established in January 1991.
